I don’t go to sleep no more very often anymore because I think even over the space of twelve years, one hundred times is probably more time than one needs to see the same play, even a large strange play that is also very good. I still have an enormous amount of affection for this big weird building and all the big weird shit inside it, but there’s generally a lot of things competing for my $150 at any given moment. you know how it is.

anyway! all of this to say I went to the show a few weeks ago for the first time since summer 2022, and I had a blast, with the exception of the approximately twenty minutes total I spent in manderley, which was a little bit heartbreaking, if I’m honest.

but that’s okay. all of the new cast (and all of the new-to-me cast) are great, all of the not-new cast are great, I had a great time stalking the cunning man as per usual, everything is great. (please do actually fix manderley though.) ok thanks bye!

it’s probably not a surprise that this summer I went to london to see the same weird play several times (esp since it’s not even the first time I have gone to london to see a weird play several times). I have spent pretty much every PTO day I’ve had with family ever since my mom died in 2019, so this was my first for-real vacation in many years and it was great, all of it, zero regrets.

the show is completely, completely my shit, tbh even more than the drowned man was. (in fact if we are friends I have probably already spoken to you way too much about how much I liked this show.) but of course the real immersive experience was the friends we made along the way.

I’m aiming to make it back in 2023, so feel free to recommend things that aren’t the burnt city that I should visit or eat or do, particularly if those things are open on mondays or tuesdays. (london why are all your good cocktail bars closed on mondays!)

My hobby: reading one-star Yelp reviews of Sleep No More.

I think this was a terrible show, I am not sure if maybe it is involved with satanic worship or just a different style of acting that does not grab or keep my attention but people seemed like they were in a trance and I felt like an outsider. I have no idea why this show is being compared to Shakespeare or anything bc there was no storyline, just people rolling on the floor, drinking, running around with mask in a zombie like manner. 100 dollars a ticket and I laughed for 20 minutes bc me and my boyfriend looked like lost pigeons, I used the ladies room and left with that ugly mask.

I love Jesus and maybe that is why this was not for me. I’ll leave it at that.

Let’s count how many things are factually incorrect and/or basically hilarious in this one insipid paragraph!

Collected treasures from my visits to Sleep No More at the McKittrick Hotel. Not pictured: treats from the candy shop, and another I won in a card trick from the speakeasy bartender. The first time my gentleman caller and I attended the show was last spring, and I don’t think we could have predicted that we’d have gone back another three times in less than a year. Have I had enough yet? Apparently not, since I just got tickets today to the special Manhattan Cocktail Classic event in May. It’s not that I feel a burning need to collect achievements… I suppose just want another chance to be in that place for three hours.

Remember when I got contacts specifically to see this show for the first time? Remember when the programs were a single sheet of folded paper (and were free)? Remember when the cheap shows were $75?

Number 84 was a last minute decision borne of a three margarita brunch and a history of poor impulse control.

I wasn’t aware before now that seeing Maximilian cover Nine Inch Nails with two fembots and a foul-mouthed sock monkey was something I needed in my life, but it turns out it absolutely was.

I have video of this. It will be on the internet soon.

Hey Emma, I'm going to visit New York soon and I'm considering visiting Sleep No More, since what I see on your blog is pretty interesting, but I'm still confused as to what it's all about?

You should read @scoutingny‘s post about the show. It’s from 2011, but I still think it’s the best no-frills, no-spoilers explanation of what you’re signing up for. It’s the only thing I read before I attended the show for the first time.

Number 83 was only my second birthday show, as it happens. It exceeded expectations in every way - full of lovely friends, unlooked-for surprises, and enough whiskey that I’m more than a little ambivalent about being at work this morning.

But I stand by my previous assertion. The cast is really strong currently, and now that I’ve finally experienced the rest of the new content, I feel like I have to urge you again to visit the hotel if you haven’t recently. There’s just a lot of wonderful happening in that building and I think you’d be sorry to miss it.
