Saw SNM for the 2nd time on Tuesday (the 19th) and going in I didn’t think it would be possible to enjoy the show more than I did the first time but this experience was OUT OF CONTROL.
I decided to get there super early and arrived at the McKittrick behind two hardcore fans. I started reading a book but could not hold my focus overhearing the two discuss the cast for tonight and shows past. I introduced myself and discovered they are some of my all time favorite tattooed superfans bloodwillhavebloodtheysay and Caoine ! Loved talking to them before and after the show - very funny and sweet both of them.
These are all things that happened! I had the pleasure of meeting dmoldovan on Tuesday night and you should really read his whole recap because it’s great.
The tattoo crew (that’s me in the middle of the tattoo sandwich with bloodwillhavebloodtheysay and his brother) descended on the McKittrick again on Friday for I thought would just be an early show (for me anyway) but ended up being my first double header.
Honestly, I started drinking at about 7pm and stopped at around 5am, so the bulk of the evening is just a big blur of whiskey and champagne, and I’m not going to try to do a proper recap. But I was extraordinarily lucky in terms of 1:1 timing, and ended up with seven total across the two shows, five of which were completely new to me (Banquo, Lady MacDuff, Hecate, Nurse, and the sixth floor). By the time I ended up back in the Manderley after the late show, I was a big mess of sweat and ashes and scented oil and food coloring and lipstick. It was glorious, and I’m going back tonight.
p.s. I hope that is actually dreamingofmanderley. It took some sleuthing to find a photo of you! If not, will the random person I drew please stand up and claim your prize
p.p.s. caoine, I have a version of this without the I heart butts if you want it but honestly why would you ever want that one?
p.p.p.s. This is my original sleep no more self-portrait:
My 27th show on Monday was an especially good one; good timing all night plus drunken antics with bloodwillhavebloodtheysay and a couple of other friends. Also delightful to meet the folks from thebloodybusiness & catch up with scorchedthesnake.
The opening number to New Year’s Eve 2014 at the McKittrick. Apologies for the abrupt start…I did not want to turn on the camera until it was obviously okay, so I missed the first few seconds of the singers sort of materializing out of the crowd.
This whole night felt like it was designed to be relevant to my interests. Sassy dancing porters, including the fantastically bearded Nick Bruder? Butt-oriented choreography? Bartenders offering to pour shots directly into my mouth? YES YES YES.
Just before midnight there was another amazing scene with Zhauna Hecate and Austin, the Saddest Porter in the World, and MORE BUTTS. And then it snowed in the ballroom and I kissed all my friends and got black lipstick on them, and I was happy to be alive.
3 of 3. The “McKittrick Waiters” setting up. What I loved is that this is a high-energy fun style you never see at this place. And I love Zach Goddamned McNally just killing it all the way through. And Sam’s jazz hands freeze at the end. And Patrick’s solo. And also the entire rest of it. :)
This was probably my favorite part of the night. All through dinner upstairs, all our friends at the McKittrick stopped by our table at least once to tell us we needed to be in the ballroom in time for the hanging, and as soon as we got downstairs it was immediately clear why. So glad we got to see this!
Here is everything you need to know about the Valentine’s Day dance at the McKittrick. I stole the top photo from thebloodybusiness and most of the rest from Tiffany's camera.
My platonic lifemate Magdalena Fox and I are skipping the Valentine’s Day dinner at the Heath this year, but last year’s party was so fun I thought we should all admire the photos again. Plus like, that bowtie. So good.

Collected treasures from my visits to Sleep No More at the McKittrick Hotel. Not pictured: treats from the candy shop, and another I won in a card trick from the speakeasy bartender. The first time my gentleman caller and I attended the show was last spring, and I don’t think we could have predicted that we’d have gone back another three times in less than a year. Have I had enough yet? Apparently not, since I just got tickets today to the special Manhattan Cocktail Classic event in May. It’s not that I feel a burning need to collect achievements… I suppose just want another chance to be in that place for three hours.
Last night was pretty much a perfect New York evening, the kind that makes me happier than I can say with my life as it is right now. And I don’t think there’s a better way to spend the evening of the 4th than at a picnic on the roof of the McKittrick, watching fireworks with friends & fellow drunks.
eleven years ago tonight! I believe this was the only 4th of july event the mckittrick has ever had, and it was also the first event held at gallow green.
