I’ve been trying to figure out how to sum up my feelings about The Grand Paradise, but it turns out I don’t have to because someone else already did.

I liked it the first time through, but I went back for round two last night and my second experience was both entirely different and much more satisfying. (Which is also how I would describe my second trip to Sleep No More, as it happens.) 

Anyway, it’s great and you should go immediately before the rest of the world figures it out and tickets become impossible to get.

Last night was my 50th visit to Sleep No More, and I celebrated my golden jubilee with dirt, sweat, stage blood, green dye, sage, more sweat, a nail that poked a hole in my pocket, red lipstick, and quite a bit of whiskey even for me.

And I think it’s safe to say I have converted Front to Team Spooky Immersive Theater, so all in all I consider the night a success.

I caught The Lady in Red Converses with Diablo last night, in the original Then She Fell space in Williamsburg. It’s actually very similar to Then She Fell in terms of mechanics - very small audience split into even smaller groups, immersive but guided instead of sandboxy. A bit shorter at 90 minutes, but it didn’t feel hurried. Last night, as it happened, there were only four audience members including me, so I was by myself (with one or more actors) for the entire show. It was pretty great, actually.

If you’re used to Punchdrunk-style immersive shows it will be quite a different and more intimate experience, but tickets are only $35 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Go for it if you have the chance.

My only word of caution - if you’ve been to this space before for Then She Fell, don’t use that same back entrance like I did (it leads to a backstage area where I encountered a surprised Diablo). You want the main building entrance right on the street, instead.

Go see PLAY/DATE! It’s closing next week, so now’s your last chance. I saw it last night and it’s definitely one of my favorite “immersive” experiences. And stars Sleep No More alums Tim Haber and Zach McNally. Not sure why this hasn’t had more buzz amongst the SNM crowd. It’s worth it! This is the third part of a New York immersive trilogy: Sleep No More, Then She Fell and Play/Date!

Last night was pretty much a perfect New York evening, the kind that makes me happier than I can say with my life as it is right now. And I don’t think there’s a better way to spend the evening of the 4th than at a picnic on the roof of the McKittrick, watching fireworks with friends & fellow drunks.

eleven years ago tonight! I believe this was the only 4th of july event the mckittrick has ever had, and it was also the first event held at gallow green.
