MAGFest 9 happened

Romantic dinner

Nearly on a whim, my gentleman caller and I decided just before Christmas that it would be fun to go to MAGFest 9 in mid-January. And then, all of a sudden, last week it was mid-January. Now, the night before a trip of this kind, a normal person might stay in, pack their stuff, and get to sleep early. But we decided instead to get dinner at Bar Tano and then go to Secret Formula’s Arrested Development party at the Bell House. I feel like this was a wise decision, as the evening featured a number of tasty novelty cocktails and also chocolate-covered frozen bananas with various ridiculous toppings. Also, fancy coffee.

The following morning, we rose bright and early to take the train to scenic Virginia. Normally, I’m pretty fond of train travel. Compared to flying or taking the bus, it seems positively civilized. You can drink a beer, snack on a cheese plate, keep your shoes on, leave your junk untouched, and carry as much liquid as you please. We weren’t very lucky with this particular trip, though, and ended up delayed nearly three hours due to technical problems Amtrak seemed to be having with all its trains on the Boston/Washington line. So we arrived somewhat later and somewhat crankier than normal, but at least we arrived safely.

Train

We’d expected to be at MAGFest by maybe 2:30, but by the time we actually arrived in Virginia, got to our hotel and checked in, fed our hungry bellies, and headed over to the con itself, it was after 6, and the evening concerts were already well underway. But we still got to meet up with some of my friends and soak up The Oneups before it was time for the main event of the evening: The Protomen performing their first album in its entirety. This was a rare treat for me; I’ve seen quite a few Protomen shows in the past year, but before this weekend there were still a few songs I had not yet heard live. And because Act I is on the short side, we were treated to a few delightful covers, one of which I’ve included below. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

After the show, we engaged in a little post-concert socializing in our hotel room, which kept us up late enough that we nearly slept through breakfast. But we did make it, barely. Which is good, because who doesn’t love a breakfast buffet? We met up with some friends and stuffed our faces with biscuits and bacon and made it over to MAGFest just in time to catch the chiptune showcase, featuring NYC locals Zen Albatross and George & Jonathan. It was only the second time I’ve seen G&J live, and I loved it. Possibly the funnest band ever.

Later on, we met up with some of my favorite folks for a ridiculous dinner that involved more drinks than we could have anticipated, and also more fun. And then it was time for the second concert I was really looking forward to: The Protomen playing their second album in its entirety. Again, there were songs on the setlist that I was really looking forward to hearing live for the first time, and I was not disappointed. The entire evening rocked my face off. I no longer have a face. It’s sad, really.

What I love about this band is that they somehow manage to take what they do completely seriously while simultaneously being able to have fun with it. They’re incredibly high-energy, and their stage presence is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I’ve been to ten shows in the past year, and it hasn’t even started to get old. Every time I see them, I’m blown away all over again by how goddamn great they really are.

Once again we were up pretty late, and once again we made it to the hotel buffet just in time to gorge ourselves upon delicious breakfast treats. After that, though, it was time to pack up, check out, hang around for a couple more hours saying goodbye to folks, and then hop a train back to NYC.

Breakfast buffet is srs bsns.

Fierce.

Our trip home was actually completely perfect. The train was quiet, peaceful, and arrived in NYC early, if you can believe it. We were home a full two hours earlier than I expected we would be, which was a rare pleasure.

I’ve included a bunch of photos and videos from the weekend on this page, but there are tons more I haven’t embedded. If you are curious, you may consume them on Vimeo or Flickr. And if you were at MAGFest and are missing it already, I offer this small bit of solace. Enjoy it responsibly, and I’ll see you next year.
