You... — I have a special treat for Protomen fans, but only a select few of you! If you attended the Light Up the Night video shoot last month in Brooklyn, you will certainly recall that those who stayed up late were treated to a private mini-concert.
You will also recall that we were instructed that this concert was only for those who actually worked all day at the shoot (stairs and shushing and all). As such, while I have fabulous video of Beards Going Nowhere from this show, you will have to demonstrate to me that you were at the shoot before you will be allowed to see it. Send me a message with sufficient proof, and you will receive further instructions!

While I’ve been known to drink whatever shitty beer is available when the occasion calls for it, I figured we could do better than that. So I give you:
**The Good Doctor**
Bourbon (recommend Maker’s Mark, Bulleit, or Knob Creek), as much as you can handle
SNAP (a ginger liqueur) to taste
Ginger beer (ideally Reed’s Extra Ginger Brew or Gosling’s Ginger Beer)
2 Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine cherries
Bourbon for fightin’ strength, spicy ginger to nourish that rebellious fire inside, and a touch of cherry sweetness for your tender lil’ heart. Serve on the rocks.
This has been a favorite cocktail of mine for a while, and I have served it to both K.I.L.R.O.Y. and the Reanimator with good results.

We’d like to give a shoutout to truly hardcore Protomen fan ShutUpAndJamza. He’s such a total badass that not only did he attend the November show in NYC while undergoing chemotherapy, he rocked out in the middle of the goddamn pit.

Guess what? It’s the five year anniversary of this post, which means it’s now five years I’ve been friends with this cyborg motherfucker right here. Because it turns out shortly after that Reddit thread we went to PAX together and gamed some games and attended some concerts and spooned with some robots.

There’s a pretty great update thread on Reddit that you should definitely consume. Here’s to not dying!

Right now my Twitter feed is basically a dumpster fire, but there’s also this guy who I met on goddamn Reddit of all places five years ago and now we’re friends and better still he’s also not dead.

The Protomen: Sweet zombie Jesus, how I love The Protomen. There is no reason a 10-person Nashville band who do rock opera about Megaman should be good, but it so is. I have Tycho to thank for this one, actually. You may recall that I was still wicked sick during PAX, and consequently I thought pretty hard about disco-napping through the start of the Friday night shows and getting up just in time to see Front. I was assured, however, that even as a Protonoob I was in for quite a treat, and that turned out to be an understatement. Go get both albums right now, but also see if you can make it to a live show. I was blown away by their PAX set, and was similarly delighted at another show a couple weeks ago here in NYC. Totally worth seeing if you possibly can.
Makeup and Vanity Set: I know about MAVS because of this awesome album of 8-bit Protomen remixes, which you should also acquire, but don’t stop there. The new self-titled album that came out in March is sheer pleasure. I feel like the same folks who dig Download and cEvin Key’s other solo stuff would dig this. Excellent background music for working.

Anamanaguchi: Another PAX revelation! They’re also Brooklyn locals, which is handy. I recommend giving them a try even if you normally aren’t really into chiptune. I was skeptical, but both albums have made it into heavy rotation on my iPhone.
Skeletonbreath: I love it when I’m surprised by an opening band. I feel like openers are often not paired very well with their headliners, which leads to everyone having kind of a shitty time. I can’t imagine it’s fun playing to a crowd that’s just waiting for you to get off the fucking stage, and while I appreciate the chance to pee and get another beer, I’d usually rather get an extra hour of sleep than see another band I’m not really into. But I’m really glad I got to see Skeletonbreath, because I can’t imagine I would have found out about them otherwise, and they’re rad. Go check them out.

Last night was pretty much a perfect New York evening, the kind that makes me happier than I can say with my life as it is right now. And I don’t think there’s a better way to spend the evening of the 4th than at a picnic on the roof of the McKittrick, watching fireworks with friends & fellow drunks.
