Disappointing to see Halloween and NYE branded as “Supercinema,” but I guess it was inevitable. :(

I’ll just be over here watching videos of the Boy Witch party forever…

Yeah, I’m super sad I missed that one…

But at the same time… I gotta say… I’m about 500000% more interested in a Moulin Rouge-themed NYE than I was with last year’s Grandmother’s Tale-themed party.

Because *Moulin Rouge*.

I’m an enormous Universal Monster hoe and I fucking love Moulin Rouge, but I’m pretty disappointed the next two major parties will not be show related. It just doesn’t feel right.

It was extraordinarily special, unlikely, and magical that they held gigantic, expensive parties themed around something so obscure, in the grand scheme of things, as characters and scenes from Sleep No More. It’s disappointing to see this year’s parties change to something so mainstream.

I’m still going to attend, and I have nothing but respect for the creative team that makes it happen. I’m sure they’ll be great parties. But am I going to have that sense of overwhelming awe that this is even happening?

The Porter finding the ring in a crowded ballroom at midnight, hundreds of party attendees getting their eyes painted to look like Boy Witch’s, placemats at the Heath scattered with little golden flies… I’ll keep an open mind, but that was insane brilliance that Supercinema has never matched.

(Not to mention the insights into character and narrative, and the beautiful choreography and performances, that put the Boy Witch party in its own league, a work of art. I knew as soon as it happened that we’d never get something that perfect again.)

Yes to all of this. Initially I was weeeeeeeeeeeeeletsallbevampires. But the weeeee was a temporary thrill.

I will be happy to see you all, though! There is still no other place I’d rather be for Halloween.

If everything is a giant bust we can retreat to the crypt and watch @rottenwoodandwiltedsunflowers ‘s vids. Like this one that I still watch way too often.

On the one hand, I’m kind of relieved I don’t need to even consider NYE, since I loathe Baz Luhrmann and his insipid trash films. But on the other, I was really looking forward to seeing what the theme was for this year’s Inferno… and now, less so.

Collected treasures from my visits to Sleep No More at the McKittrick Hotel. Not pictured: treats from the candy shop, and another I won in a card trick from the speakeasy bartender. The first time my gentleman caller and I attended the show was last spring, and I don’t think we could have predicted that we’d have gone back another three times in less than a year. Have I had enough yet? Apparently not, since I just got tickets today to the special Manhattan Cocktail Classic event in May. It’s not that I feel a burning need to collect achievements… I suppose just want another chance to be in that place for three hours.

Remember when I got contacts specifically to see this show for the first time? Remember when the programs were a single sheet of folded paper (and were free)? Remember when the cheap shows were $75?

Number 84 was a last minute decision borne of a three margarita brunch and a history of poor impulse control.

I wasn’t aware before now that seeing Maximilian cover Nine Inch Nails with two fembots and a foul-mouthed sock monkey was something I needed in my life, but it turns out it absolutely was.

I have video of this. It will be on the internet soon.

Hey Emma, I'm going to visit New York soon and I'm considering visiting Sleep No More, since what I see on your blog is pretty interesting, but I'm still confused as to what it's all about?

You should read @scoutingny‘s post about the show. It’s from 2011, but I still think it’s the best no-frills, no-spoilers explanation of what you’re signing up for. It’s the only thing I read before I attended the show for the first time.

But I stand by my previous assertion. The cast is really strong currently, and now that I’ve finally experienced the rest of the new content, I feel like I have to urge you again to visit the hotel if you haven’t recently. There’s just a lot of wonderful happening in that building and I think you’d be sorry to miss it.

Number 82. Sleep No More is really something right now — in my opinion the show is as good as it’s ever been. The cast are almost all new to me but they’re doing some great work, and there are still a few of my favorite familiar faces, including a couple I was not expecting (hello, Zach McNally boy witch).

The new content, though, is astonishing. I can’t overstate how intoxicating it is to walk into a show I’ve been going to for over four years and then spend half the evening with no idea what the fuck is going on.

Anyway, probably go to the show if it’s been a while since you were last there.
