Alan Rickman reads Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask’d, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
   And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
   As any she belied with false compare.

Bumblebee Cabbagepatch was a pretty solid Hamlet, but this show committed a bit more textual fuckery than I am comfortable with for reasons that were not at all clear. I have nothing against wacky adaptations of Shakespeare, but if what you’re doing is not in fact intended as anything in that vein, then I don’t know. I mean, Hamlet is a pretty good play as written, yeah? Yeah.

On Sunday I caught the final performance of Macbeth at Park Avenue Armory. I’m happy to say that the show was outstanding, and it was the ideal setting for Kenneth Branagh. Lots of reviews referred to the production as “immersive,” which of course it wasn’t really, but the set really was remarkable and almost impossibly vast. I liked the addition of a literal blasted heath. The tickets weren’t cheap, but I’m glad I got decent seats - near enough to see everything quite well, but high enough to be out of the mud splatter zone.

I’ve been thinking about this production again the past few days, maybe because it’s getting warm again and I’m remembering the highlights of last summer. Sometimes I think I don’t ever need to see or read Macbeth again, but then I remember things like this and realize I always have room in my life for more (good) Macbeth.

I recently realized I never posted any photos from Bottom’s Dream, the incredible burlesque version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream produced in February by two of my most fabulous friends, Lewd Alfred Douglas and Johnny Panic. So: here are some photos, at last. You might also enjoy this delightful sizzle reel from the same show.

If this is the kind of thing you’re into (and come on, you know it is), you might want to follow Lewd!Panic Queer Burlesque and Theatre on FB to keep up with future endeavors.

If “Henry V with beer pong” sounds like fun to you, then you would totally be into Three Day Hangover’s Hank V. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you secretly think the fart & dick jokes might be your favorite part of Shakespeare, then a) let’s be friends and b) you should have gone to this show.

Bonus: Hank and Katherine do some dirty dancing.

On Saturday, I bundled up and ignored my lingering sore throat and went to see two shows I was really looking forward to.

No Man’s Land was everything I hoped it could be, really just an absolute treat. I’d like to go see Godot as well, but I’ve kind of blown my theatre budget for the next month between these shows and last week, so it’s probably not going to happen.

Speaking of theatre budgets, actually, I have to say I felt kind of ripped off by the Bedlam production of Hamlet. I spent over $80 for a general admission ticket, and I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t four actors in street clothes performing in a bare room full of folding chairs. It wasn’t the worst version of Hamlet I’ve ever seen, but I wish I’d risked not getting in and waited for a 20at20 ticket instead.

Also: I really wish people who write marketing copy for these shows would stop using “immersive” as though all it meant was “the seating arrangement is kind of weird.”
