Seriously, women make 77 cents to a man’s dollar, but own only 36% as much wealth – and the wealth gap between men and women has widened even as the income gap slowly narrows. Women who never married own 6 percent of the wealth of their bachelor brothers. It gets worse: black and Latino never-married women own a penny for every dollar of wealth controlled by men of their race. And of course, women make up almost two out of three adults living in poverty. Since the capacity to make big political donations is a factor of having disposable wealth, not just income, the wealth gap between men and women is the crucial factor behind the donor gap. That’s the main reason “why women don’t give.”

CARA: So-

NICOLE: So-

CARA: How is it being a woman on your planet?

NICOLE: Same time?

CARA: Sure.

NICOLE: A lot

BOTH: better than it used to be.

NICOLE: And…

BOTH: getting better at a glacial pace.

NICOLE: Which means we…

BOTH: might achieve gender parity by the time the glaciers melt.

CARA: Do you guys still practice virgin sacrifice?

NICOLE: We call them

BOTH: pop stars.

CARA: witch hunts?

NICOLE: But that’s just because the “man” in this statistic is white by default.

CARA: Totally.

CARA: Then a greater pay disparity for black people is a quantum event?

NICOLE: Well it’s more of an alternate reality.

CARA: I hear you, sister.

CARA: I’m woke.

She clinks with NICOLE’s glass, which remains unraised.

CARA: I mean, I wrote this play.

NICOLE: And since feminism is white by default, black women’s voices are secondary.

CARA: You wrote this play.

NICOLE: Just this one line?

They take a beat to look at each other.

In a matter of years, the Lowell women would become increasingly radical, as crusaders for both worker and gender equality. They had originally been encouraged to write ladylike stories for the mill girls’ literary magazine, the Lowell Offering, which was launched by a local minister and supported by the textile companies. By the 1840s, many young working women were filing copy instead with the Voice of Industry, a labor newspaper published by the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association. The paper’s “Female Department,” edited by the association’s president, Sarah Bagley, featured articles by and about women workers, with a declared mission both to revamp “the system of labor” and “defend woman’s rights.” “You have been degraded long enough,” an article in the Voice advised its female readers. “You have sufficiently long been considered ‘the inferior’—a kind of ‘upper servant,’ to obey and reverence, and be in subjection to your equal.” No more. “Enter at once upon your privileges,” the article exhorted, calling on women to demand their equal rights to education, employment, and respect from men.

Oh muh guh I’m so excited.

Last night was pretty much a perfect New York evening, the kind that makes me happier than I can say with my life as it is right now. And I don’t think there’s a better way to spend the evening of the 4th than at a picnic on the roof of the McKittrick, watching fireworks with friends & fellow drunks.

eleven years ago tonight! I believe this was the only 4th of july event the mckittrick has ever had, and it was also the first event held at gallow green.

I don’t go to sleep no more very often anymore because I think even over the space of twelve years, one hundred times is probably more time than one needs to see the same play, even a large strange play that is also very good. I still have an enormous amount of affection for this big weird building and all the big weird shit inside it, but there’s generally a lot of things competing for my $150 at any given moment. you know how it is.

anyway! all of this to say I went to the show a few weeks ago for the first time since summer 2022, and I had a blast, with the exception of the approximately twenty minutes total I spent in manderley, which was a little bit heartbreaking, if I’m honest.

but that’s okay. all of the new cast (and all of the new-to-me cast) are great, all of the not-new cast are great, I had a great time stalking the cunning man as per usual, everything is great. (please do actually fix manderley though.) ok thanks bye!
