Somehow, Apfel’s honesty never comes across as insulting. In her dry, irreverent, witty drawl, everything she says seems like casual words of wisdom relayed from the gods. “The worst fashion faux-pas is looking in the mirror and seeing somebody else,” she asserts. “Just because Angelina Jolie looks divine on the runway doesn’t mean you’re not going to end up looking like a horse’s ass in the same outfit. You have to know who you are and what you can carry off. And learning who you are is not easy, so you have to work at it. Because you’re never going to be elegant or stylish mimicking somebody else. You might be fashionable, but fashion and style are two very different things.”
I have serious nail envy, now. Though my nails are actually pretty festive, as I painted them with several coats of Good Tidings We Bling just in time for Lefty’s holiday party yesterday.

“This is a “burger with the lot” from the Sunburnt Cow in NYC. It comes with cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, fried egg, beet, pineapple, bacon, and was part of a really amazing brunch. 9/10!
My nails are American Apparel Neon Red with a clear Sephora by OPI topcoat. This photo doesn’t really show off how bright they are, but in natural light they’re amazing. My favorite summer color.”

“My nails aren’t super impressive in this one - I just did a quickie coat of Go with the Flow-er from Sephora by OPI because I was on my way to a friend’s birthday party and she loves pink.
But the burger was amazing. It’s the insane burger at Pies n Thighs in Williamsburg, and what makes it insane is that it comes with bacon, fried egg, and cheese on the burger. It’s maybe my favorite burger in New York, despite the messiness. They also have killer desserts - I love their sour cherry pie.”

“I’m enjoying a Southern Comfort burger from Duke’s in NYC. You can’t really see the patty, but it’s topped with onion rings, bacon, BBQ sauce, and monterey jack. Messy and good! I’d give it a 7/10.
On my nails is Sephora by OPI polish in ‘What’s a Tire Jack?’ which is topped with Martha Stewart fine glitter in Hematite and a drugstore brand clear topcoat. I couldn’t find a glitter polish in quite the color I wanted, so I decided to just use regular craft glitter. This photo doesn’t really show off the sparkle, but it looks awesome in sun and has lasted longer without chipping than most of my DIY manicures.”
Last night was pretty much a perfect New York evening, the kind that makes me happier than I can say with my life as it is right now. And I don’t think there’s a better way to spend the evening of the 4th than at a picnic on the roof of the McKittrick, watching fireworks with friends & fellow drunks.
eleven years ago tonight! I believe this was the only 4th of july event the mckittrick has ever had, and it was also the first event held at gallow green.
