I think my philosophy background absolutely does affect my life. I studied analytic philosophy (as opposed to continential), which more than anything else teaches you about how to construct a reasonable argument, and how to critically evaluate the arguments of others. This is, of course, a useful skill in all kinds of contexts. (Philosophy majors often go on to law school, for example.)
As for still reading books on the subject, I do indeed! My specialty was epistemology in general and contextualism in particular, so I try to stay on top of the current literature as it relates to my interests. My Kindle has made that much easier in the past year.
