Mythmaker
So today’s the day, and the new Skinny Puppy album is out. I’m not going to review it – at least, not right now – but I will say that if you were wondering whether or not you should buy it, the answer is yes. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to listen to the album another five times and pass out on my lawn. (I do not have a lawn.)

Old Lady Story
I’ve been playing a lot of Burning Crusade. Did you notice how I was posting shit pretty much every day and then the expansion hit and nothing? Yeah. Anyway, it’s a lot of fun but I’m not going to say much more about it because I know from hearing people talk about professional sports that there are few things in the world more dull than the arcane details of a hobby in which...

Avert your eyes
Do I even need to tell you what I was doing last night? I didn’t think so. I haven’t commented on WoW in a long time, but I hope you’ll forgive me just this once. So far: Hellfire Citadel is fun (even if it does smack a bit too much of Blackrock Mountain) and instancing is a good way to avoid the crushing zone lag in the rest of Outland. No real way to avoid the 900-person...

Dampness
The rain ended up making my weekend somewhat more movie-oriented than I’d anticipated. In addition to Dead Man’s Chest, we watched The Libertine (not bad), The Piano Teacher (required brain-bleaching afterwards), Spellbound (good but I’d already seen it) and Amélie (likewise). In the past week, I’ve been accused by three different people of being difficult to shop for. I...

Yarr
I finally got around to watching Dead Man’s Chest this afternoon. (I know, right?) I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. I guess I was expecting more of the same, but I should have realized “more of the same” meant it was likely to suffer from sequelitis - which it did. I have a special hatred for cliffhanger endings, also. But it was still good fun, if not as...

I have nothing to offer you today, except the best thing in the world. And that is this video of a baby sloth in a box.

Ill-equipped
For a while now, the CMOAT and I (and presumably most everyone else who lives in New York City) have been getting booklets from the City on surviving various emergencies - hurricanes, avian flu outbreaks, the rise of the ravaging undead, and so on. All of them emphasize the importance of having one or more portable survival kits in case of an evacuation. We’ve mostly ignored this stuff....

Apocalyptic
I saw peanut butter magnet man again this morning. He looked determined. Today’s probably like the third really cold day we’ve had this winter. I am estimating this based on the amount of cat hair that has accumulated on my winter coat so far: it’s not all that much, because I have been wearing hoodies and jackets instead. And over the weekend I wore a t-shirt because it was...

Etc
I think one of my favorite things about living in New York during the winter is that it’s still pitch dark when I wake up in the morning. I like watching our living room view of Manhattan and the river go from night to sunrise while I have my first cup of coffee before work.

Me, Me, Me
A few weeks ago I was approached by my friend Margaret for an interview. She’s writing an article on the early days of blogging - as in, that misty prehistoric era of A Few Years Ago. As it’s likely that only a couple of snippets of this interview will appear in the finished piece, she suggested I might want to post it in its entirety. I suppose if there is anyone in the world...

Lost in our living room
Because there is something wrong with my brain, I enjoy organizing things more than I should. I spent a chunk of this morning digging through dusty stacks of DVDs and video games and sorting everything out to my satisfaction. Or almost - this is yet another area in which we’re sorely lacking the necessary storage. But I did uncover a bunch of movies I’d forgotten we owned, so the...

When people run in circles
Chris and I watched the director’s cut of Donnie Darko tonight. It’s been some time since I first saw the film, so the parts that were different from the other version didn’t leap out as much as you might suppose. I did notice immediately, though, that the music in the opening scene was different. I wonder why? Whatever the reason, never let it be said that I don’t relish an opportunity to tell...

It turns out I like catfish
I work in lower Manhattan, so the abundance of places from which to order or otherwise acquire lunch is pretty staggering. Places in the Village, Chinatown, Little Italy, and SoHo will all deliver to my building. Nevertheless, I have a few definite favorites, and of these San Loco is somewhere near the top. It’s cheap, tasty Mexican food - but not fast food Mexican like you get at those...

Ahem
It’s well past Christmas now, and there have been two total days this winter that have required a coat, at least in New York City. Today it was 58°, and tomorrow it will be 62°. That’s right: it’s still hoodie weather in the first week of January. I am not complaining – merely observing. And possibly buying more hoodies. Please to enjoy this thread about strangely addressed items that were...

Hooray for 2007
While I love these French protesters against the New Year, I cannot agree with their sentiment. There is a new Skinny Puppy album coming out in a few short weeks, and it looks as though a new William Gibson novel will be available this year as well. I can only look fondly on a year that seems slated to bring me such bliss.

Delicious Library + LibraryThing
After much procrastination, I finally made a start at cataloging some of my many books. I used my iSight to scan a bunch of them into Delicious Library, which was satisfying but not as seamless as I had hoped. Many of my older books and almost all my science fiction and fantasy were either not correctly identified by their UPC or were not identified at all. (Why especially those genres, I wonder?)...

Fat Sacks
I guess it’s been a while, again. I spent a chunk of last week in Massachusetts being extremely festive, as you might expect. Although I had much less time off this Christmas than I have in the past couple of years, I still ended up at the folks’ in time for plenty of wrapping and baking and unwrapping and eating. And while I’m the last person in the world to get sentimental...
