Reading
Over the weekend I finished the trade paperback version of V for Vendetta, and then for the past day or so I’ve been tearing through Spook Country, which I’ve now finished as well. Both were great reads, but I’m a little sad to be done with them. This is particularly true of Spook Country - I waited so long for a new Gibson book that it was probably unwise of me to devour this one as soon as I got my grubby paws on it. But especially given yesterday’s commuting nightmare, I’ve had plenty of time over the past couple of days with nothing to do but read, and once I started in on the book it was hard to stop. I won’t say much about it, though, as lots of people I know haven’t even bought it yet.
As for the storm, in my neck of the woods it was mostly just inconvenient. No tornado damage on Roosevelt Island, but the train was flooded, of course. I managed to get across the river via the tram, but was stranded once I got there - no subway service at any of the four stations I visited, buses too full, and not an empty cab to be seen. So I stopped in at for some eggs and coffee at a diner around the corner from the place I worked at in 2000, then tried in vain to get a cab for about an hour, and finally gave up and went home.

V for Vendetta is an excellent book, Alan Moore is a truly skilled writer. I’m not sure how much experience you’ve had with graphic novels, but if you enjoyed Moore’s writing, I believe his “From Hell” graphic novel would be just your taste Emma. Jack the Ripper, dark and dirty Victorian London, can’t go wrong.

V for Vendetta is wonderful. I’m a huge Alan Moore fan. I got addicted to him back when he was still writing Swamp thing, and have been ever since. I’m almost done with Spook Country, and must admit I’m enjoying it more than any Gibson book in a long time. From Hell is also an excellent Moore book, though I still believe that that The Watchmen is his crowning achievement. If you’re looking for another great trade series to try, if you haven’t already, you should check out Transmetropolitan.
Nice, Transmetropolitan looks pretty interesting. As regards Watchmen, it’s the best graphic novel I’ve ever read, Moore or otherwise. Right now I’m working my way through the Conan trades from Dark Horse, and they’re fantastic. The art is top shelf and the writing really captures that “Robert E. Howard”ness that’s lacking in contemporary Conan novels. In any case, keeping this relevant to the writer of _this_ blog, Robert E. Howard was, incidentally, a friend and regular correspondent of H.P. Lovecraft.
