All You Need To Know

I don’t think I need to tell you all much about last night. The fact that the bar was at one point actually on fire: that right there encapsulates the flavor of the evening.

Flaming Bar

Not pictured: our now-legendary bartender, who danced down the flaming bar either shortly before or just after this picture was taken. Celebratory shots were consumed.

Alas, poor Limelight

Company Christmas party last night was good times, which was especially excellent as work-related events have a large built-in potential for suck. But I work with a neat group of people so that’s less true here than at some other places I’ve been.

I read this morning that Limelight will be turned into a mall. I find that notion so incredibly depressing that I almost don’t even want to think about it. I’ve been to so many events there - club nights, release parties, concerts. I’ve seen so many bands there that I can’t even remember them all. And I met Ogre in the Giger room after an ohGr show in 2001.

I wonder if it means something that every venue or club I’ve loved in the time I’ve lived in New York has closed, going all the way back to the Bank and Mother and more recently with CBGBs and now Limelight. I guess that’s the nature of the city, but it still sucks.

I don’t want a lot for Christmas

It’s the middle of December, but here in New York we’ve still got the same eerily mild weather we’ve had since September. It’s 50 to 65 degrees, often foggy or drizzly, with the occasional cold day thrown in but no real winter weather yet. I should be happy about this, as it’s essentially an extended fall. And I love fall, so I am happy. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t strange. I’m not quite wishing for snow yet because I know by March I’ll be sick to death of slogging around in the toxic black gutter-muck that New York snow eventually becomes. But 65 and foggy, just a week and change before Christmas? That ain’t right.

And yeah - Christmas. As far as I’m concerned, Halloween just happened (that’s why I haven’t posted the photos yet, you see) so I’m not quite prepared to deal with Christmas yet, but it seems to be coming whether I’m prepared for it or not. I don’t have much time off for the holiday this year, but I’ll be heading back up to Massachusetts nonetheless and I’m busily buying the last few presents I need to get and figuring out travel plans. I’m sure it’s a sign of something that I have to check my Amazon order history to make sure that the stuff I’m buying for people this year I didn’t already buy last year.

Anyway, I guess I’m about ready for 2006 to be over. It wasn’t a terrible year, but it went by awfully quickly and I spent what seemed like a huge portion of it sick in bed. Here’s hoping 2007 does not follow the same pattern.

PS: I’ve had that Mariah Carey Christmas song stuck in my head for the past three days now. You know the one I’m talking about. If it doesn’t go away soon, you may not be hearing from me again.

Shit I did this week

  1. Found a problem with a site I’ve been working on for four months that appears only in certain versions of Firefox, and only under OS X. Researched problem for many hours, tried many non-solutions, killed many luckless vagrants in my rage and frustration.
  2. Finally got the fucking problem fixed.
  3. Did most of my Christmas shopping, but not all of it.
  4. Caught my third cold this month, which strikes me as a little unfair. Chris, meanwhile, gets the sniffles for a day and wakes up miraculously cured the next morning. I hate him.
  5. Bought the world’s ugliest hat, and wore it anyway because it’s balls-freezingly cold outside. Here is how you know when to wear a hat in New York: If the puddles of human and dog urine have frozen to the sidewalk in little glacier formations, it is hat weather.
  6. Wrote a note reminding myself to buy a less ugly hat.
