Some days I miss school so much that I start thinking seriously about grad school again, but when that happens there’s nothing like this to yank me back down to earth. (Except maybe grad students themselves, who tell me that if there’s anything else I could possibly enjoy doing, I should do that instead.) I like school, and I would really like to go back. But I also really like being able to pay my rent, so there’s that.
Ideally, I would have thought of this before someone else did, and I’d have two hundred grand just begging to be spent on higher education, but that’s sadly not the case.
On my way in last night I was talking to my doorman, who asked me how I was liking the cooler weather. I told him I loved it, and he didn’t believe me - he had been expecting me to complain about the end of summer, which I guess everyone else has been doing. Now I guess the building staff have a third thing to put on their list for me: I’m the girl who always wears black, gets a lot of mail, and likes cold weather.
Over the weekend Chris and I happened to look out the window and saw a floating island going by our window. On the whole, it was a pretty bizarre sight. I guess I’m not really that excited by conceptual art in general, but hey - who doesn’t like trees?
I have nothing to complain about today except being a little sleepier and a little busier than I’d like to be. I am still getting used to the idea of not having any major issues to worry about for the time being - only little everyday ones. Life, at the moment, is pretty peachy.
Breakfast this morning was Boo Berry - for the first time in easily ten or fifteen years. I found it at my grocery store a few days ago and immediately bought a box. Blue milk is an awesome sight to behold, I’ll tell you what.
The weather was lovely and cool this morning, also. Apparently it’s supposed to get up to 85 later, but it didn’t feel like more than 65 or so when I left my building, which is as it should be.
I’m kind of afraid to jinx it, but I have to say that life is pretty sweet right now. Chris got some great news yesterday, things are good at work, and it’s almost October. I’m sure that someone will be along to shit on my head fairly soon, because if historical evidence is any guide, I am not allowed to be stress-free for any extended period of time. But still. I am savoring the moment.
I guess the one thing that could use some improvement is the god damned weather, but I already complained about that yesterday so I’m not going to do it again today.
We’ve been having fun with ye olde cat cam, though when everyone gets tired of cat ass, we may move it to another window so that it can take pictures of Manhattan and the river. It’s better than having the iSight sit in a box, anyway.
I’m a little depressed that it’s late September now and the temperatures are still in the 80-90s. I feel like we’re getting cheated out of our autumn, just like we did last year, when it was hot through October and then suddenly it was winter. But maybe it will cool down soon. I’m certainly pretending it’s fall, anyway, and you can’t stop me.
So my iSight had been sitting in a box for nearly a year, as you probably gathered if you visit my cams page at all. Chris and I had decided a while back that we should convert it to a cat cam, since Tigger is more of a camwhore than either of us will ever be. Yesterday, I finally got around to setting it up and pointing it at the windowsill behind our desks where he likes to sit and watch pigeons that land on our balcony. You can view the results here.
We tricked him into hopping up there a couple of times by using his favorite feather toy - just to see that everything was working. It will only take pictures when motion is detected, so for the most part all you should see are cat pictures. Once in a while it will be fooled by dramatic changes in the light, though - like when the sun goes behind a cloud. The photos are automatically uploaded to Flickr, so I don’t really have to do anything except keep the cat from savaging the iSight.
Note that my cat cam is not the original CatCam - you can find that here.
Met up with my drunken philosophy crew last night for the first time this fall, and this morning I have the hangover to prove it. But hey, that’s what Fridays are for, right? In my experience, at least, Thursdays aren’t Thursdays without vodka, and Fridays aren’t Fridays without headaches.
Either way, I’m headed home for a night of pajama-wearing and TiVo-setting-up in just a couple of hours, so it could be a lot worse.
I glanced over my referrer logs yesterday and noticed that someone from crateandbarrel.com arrived at my site by Googling for “crate & barrel.” The best part is that the post they found was this one, which is entitled “Screw You, Crate & Barrel.”
So, where’s my free stuff?
Work is a little nuts with all the post-vacation catching up this week, so you’ll have to excuse my lack of posting yesterday. I do think it’s a little unfair how hot it is here - we’re in mid-September now, there shouldn’t be any days where the high is 90+. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Incidentally, I saw another guy on the subway who was using iPod headphones without an iPod - this time, they were attached to an old-school Sony Walkman. Good times.
