Two Subway Things
This one happened a while back, but I don’t think I mentioned it. I was on my way home from work and there was a man sitting near me listening to music with the standard white iPod earbuds. Because I was standing and holding a pole right next to his seat, I happened to notice that the earbuds in fact were connected to an ancient Sony Discman, which was more or less hidden inside his bag (I could only see it because I was almost directly over him). I mentioned this to my coworkers and we wondered how such a thing could come to pass. As I see it, there are two possibilities. He may actually be an iPod owner, and perhaps his iPod is being serviced or was stolen or something, and he’s had to resort to a Discman in the meantime. But the other, more scintillating possibility, is that this is someone who actually went out and bought a pair of Apple earbuds in order to make people think he had an iPod, when he in fact does not. I hope for his sake that it’s the former. Because otherwise, I mean, yow!
The second Subway Thing: someone passed out on the train I was on yesterday morning. I’ve been on many a train that’s been held in the station due to “a sick passenger,” but this was the first time I actually saw it happen. The passenger in question was a well-dressed Asian woman who seemed to be on her way to work - she had been standing and holding onto a pole when she just suddenly collapsed. A mystery.
