I’m A Government Man

Tonight I learned many things, among which is the fact that there’s a Hooters in Manhattan. Who knew? Not me.

I’m too tired to write anything worthwhile this week (not that I ever really write anything worthwhile). I’d be in bed right now if I didn’t still have to eat dinner. I’m not even sure that I wouldn’t rather be sleeping than eating dinner, actually.

Listening to a lot of Talking Heads the past couple of days, incidentally.

Ugh

It’s Tuesday night and I already feel like I need to sleep for two days straight. I don’t know what conclusions to draw from that except that I should probably just go to bed.

Hurr

Pretty quiet weekend. I had a lot of work to do, so I got up very early (as in: only an hour later than I get up on weekdays) on Saturday and Sunday to do it before I could get distracted by other things. Sitting at my desk in my pajamas drinking too much coffee, hours before anyone else I knew was up - it’s the same way I managed large quantities of work when I was at NYU, and as a result I sort of felt like I was in college all weekend.

It was also a Warcraft-free weekend, because for once when I had a few free hours I just didn’t feel like spending them killing satyrs or owlbeasts or doing an instance. So Chris and I finally made our way through the stack of Netflix DVDs that had gone unwatched for quite a while (Love Actually, American Psycho, Habit) and (wonder of wonders) I worked on this site a little bit as well. You probably won’t see the results for quite a while yet, but it was good to do work I wasn’t getting paid for for a little bit.

This morning I’m tired and would really like another day to sleep and read or watch movies, but I’ll live.

Improper Suggestions

There’s nothing like topping off a twelve hour work day with a nice heaping portion of taxes. Mmmmm, taxes.

Of course, understand that when I suggest I am doing my own taxes, what I really mean is that I’m gathering up the relevant forms (two W2’s and a 1099 this year, I’m on a roll) and sending all of the information to my mother. Who really does my taxes.

But I did work a twelve hour day!

What Trent Reznor’s Listening To

Trent recently hosted Radio 1’s Rock Show, as he happened to be in the UK for the Asotria gigs while the regular DJ was in LA (of all places). Below is a list of songs that he played - it’s worth noting that this is the correct list, unlike the list on the BBC’s site. He told listeners that these songs (with the exception of the three NIN tracks) are all taken from his iPod’s “Most Played” smart playlist. I find it interesting that there’s no industrial here at all - make of that what you will.

  1. LCD Soundsystem - “Movement”
  2. Primal Scream - “Accelerator” – Kevin Shields Mix
  3. Saul Williams - “List of Demands”
  4. TV on the Radio - “Dreams”
  5. Cat Power - “He War”
  6. Wilco - “Radio Cure”
  7. Nine Inch Nails - “The Hand That Feeds”
  8. Brainiac - “Fresh New Eyes”
  9. My Bloody Valentine - “Lose My Breath”
  10. Wire - “Being Watched”
  11. Nine Inch Nails - “Burn”
  12. LCD Soundsystem - “Losing My Edge”
  13. Jesus and Mary Chain - “Darklands”
  14. Soft Cell - “Seedy Films”
  15. Pere Ubu - “Final Solution”
  16. The Rapture - “House of Jealous Lovers”
  17. Talking Heads - “Born Under Punches”
  18. Saul Williams - “African Student Movement”
  19. Autolux - “Here Comes Everybody”
  20. Nine Inch Nails - “The Big Comedown”

Malformed Earth Born

Same old, same old. I’m smoking more and drinking more coffee as things have ramped up a bit with the job(s). But when I say “smoking more,” I mean “sometimes more than once a day.” I’m still in no danger of going through more than two packs of cloves a month, which I think is pretty reasonable. What I really need to do is get more sleep (see yesterday), but at this point I’d have to go to bed before I finish dinner in order to get a full night in, so I guess I’m back to saving it up for weekends. I know I can’t do it forever, but things will settle down eventually.

Chris and I have been sadly neglecting our Netflix account. The decline in our rental frequency pretty much coincides with our purchase of Warcraft, but now that I don’t even have time for Warcraft, who knows what will happen to my movie habits. Lately I’ve been in the mood to watch American Psycho again. This probably has something to do with working in the financial district, but my coworkers can rest easy: I have no interest in dismembering and/or eating them.

Last week I overdid it with the NIN, I think. I’ve gone on a Skinny Puppy binge instead this week. I don’t ever get tired of Skinny Puppy, really.

Zzzzz

I don’t know if it was the time change or what, but I literally couldn’t stay awake today. I was exhausted from the minute I woke up until I got home from work (when I was still exhausted, but it didn’t matter because I didn’t need to be alert). It actually didn’t help that when I went to Starbucks this morning, they gave me a venti skim mocha instead of a tall. All that caffeine was great at first, but (just like in college) I crashed a little while later and had an even harder time staying awake, which led me to drink more coffee and crash again. I’m going to bed super early tonight (as in, right now), so with luck I’ll be a little more wide-eyed tomorrow.

With Teeth Listening Party

So on Saturday night I hit up the listening party at Limelight Avalon for the upcoming NIN album. Attendees who preordered the album at the party got a free 7″ containing the new single and a non-album track, so I figured I’d try to get there early, as I’d heard they’d run out of the singles at previous parties. But then it turned out to be the end of the fucking world outside - rainy and unbelievably windy. I figured it wasn’t worth it, so I didn’t get there until about 7:30, when then line was already around the corner. I met up with my friends in line. Others said they’d showed up as early as noon and had been waiting in the rain all day - I bet they felt dumb when it turned out that all of us got in and there were more than enough copies of the single to go around. (I ended up with two.)

I hadn’t been to Limelight since it became Avalon, and I was pretty sad to see what they’ve done to the place. Don’t even get me started on the Giger Room business. But I still had fun. They showed NIN videos while everyone was still coming in and getting drinks and preordering the album, and it was pretty bizarre hearing everyone singing along. Eventually they got around to playing the album, and by the second or third track I was feeling relieved. I had been wondering if it would suck, but while I’m sure it will take a few more listens before I really get a sense of it, it’s safe to say it’s suck-free.

It was 10pm by the time the album was over, and they shooed all the underagers out before playing the album a second time. A couple of the people I was with had to leave because they had movie tickets, and Al and I had been thinking of hitting up Batcave after the party, but we decided that with the weather and everything it made more sense to just call it a night. So I picked up some Grolsch to celebrate the fact that the album didn’t suck, and headed home to drink it with Chris.
