The Drinking Unto Hangover

I know that drinking on a weeknight is a bad idea. I do. But when I get invited somewhere I still pretend that I’m really only going to have one pint and then scurry home so I can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for class the next morning. Of course, I also plan for the likelihood of afterward being useless for the entire night - which is good, because if I had still had to read Kierkegaard when I got home last night, bad things would have happened. I’m not sure it’s even possible to read Kierkegaard after doing shots. On a fucking Wednesday night.

In other news, I was talking to a freshman last night who succeeded in making me feel old - and I’m not old. When mentioning a friend of mine who recently turned thirty, she told me that (at the ripe old age of seventeen) she couldn’t even imagine turning twenty. Now, twenty wasn’t so long ago for me, but it’s never really seemed like a crisis birthday in my book. If you haven’t even hit twenty one yet, you should probably still be looking forward to birthdays. Unless you’re one of those people who consider high school to be the best years of their lives - in which case, I guess you really have nothing to look forward to.

Browser Switch (Again)

Now that Safari finally has Save As (well, Download Linked File As) instead of dumping everything into a single directory, I’ve switched from Firebird to Safari for what I hope is the last time. I’ve tried to make the Safari swich several times before - every once in a while, the one issue that pisses me off the most gets fixed, but usually I discover a new one pretty quickly. I haven’t found one yet, and it’s certainly an improvement in terms of speed over any of the Mozilla browsers, but I’ll give it a week or so before I dump Firebird from the Dock. (Firebird was an improvement over the version of Mozilla I’d been using before, but it was still pretty crappy and would get crappier the longer it had been running without exiting.)

I do like the way bookmarks are handled, and pop up blocking seems to be up to Moz standards so far, so as long as nothing else drives me up the wall I suspect I’ll stay with Safari. But I’ve said that before, too, so who knows?

Early To Bed And Early To Rise

Because I spent all of last week tired and a couple of hours behind in sleep, I decided to go to bed early last night, thinking I’d awake refreshed and ready for my big bad Monday eight hours later, but what really happened was that I lay there unable to doze off for a couple hours, then dozed for a couple hours, then Chris and I both woke up around four and were unable to go back to sleep until shortly before my alarm went off. That’ll learn me! Next time I won’t ever go to bed.

So Many Rooms

Yesterday it was Trading Spaces, today it was the Queer Eye marathon (in between bouts of grading and reading). It’s not that I have some kind of weird fetish for interior design and reality TV, but on the other hand Chris and I have this huge apartment that offers options for furnishing and ecorating, and we haven’t done a whole lot with it yet. The room with my desk and bookshelves (is it an office? a library? a den?) is nearly the same size as the entire apartment I used to live in, and it’s not even the biggest of the (three) bedrooms. Then there’s the kitchen and the living room. I’ve gone from having all my worldly possessions crammed into a space barely big enough for myself to sharing with one person a space big enough for four or more. It’s an incredible relief to be able to actually walk around the aparment instead of picking my way along little goat paths traced through piles of books and furniture. I think another trip to IKEA is probably in our near future, but until then, I’ve got my catalogs and my decorating shows and a ton of space to work with, so I’m a happy camper.
