Any Horse In A Storm
New York is having a thunderstorm right now, which isn’t in itself remarkable - we get them with moderate frequency this time of year. This is one of my very favorite kinds of summer thunderstorms, though, when the sky at 4pm is as black as it will five hours from now. The view from a fifth-floor conference room in my building looks like something from a Gibson novel or PKD story. Chinatown has gone very, very dark, and since the street lamps aren’t on yet the only lights out are neon ads and internally lit signs. Delicious.
Of course, I also don’t have a sweater or an umbrella or anything, but a little rain never hurt anybody. The only time I’m bothered me about being out and about in the rain is when my bag gets soaked through and the pages of my books begin to curl. Rain is also a pain for those of us who wear glasses, but since visibility isn’t at its best during a thunderstorm anyway, I usually just take mine off and peer fuzzily at everything.
Tonight Chris and I are off to see Seabiscuit. I’ve got a soft spot for horse flicks, I admit - National Velvet, The Black Stallion, and Black Beauty were all favorites when I was a kid - so we’ll see how Tobey and his equine friend fare against the classics.
