Odds, Ends

Anil Dash has a post up about FreshDirect, the newish local grocery delivery service in New York. As I mentioned a couple months ago, they don’t deliver to Brooklyn (who could blame them), but it’s nice to see they’re now at least including the Village in their definition of “metro New York.” I haven’t tried them yet, but Anil certainly seems like a happy customer. In the misty prehistoric dawn of early 2000, Spencer and I would have Kozmo deliver movie rentals and food to our office at the end of the day before heading back to Brooklyn for the night, since Kozmo didn’t deliver there either. No love for Brooklyn.

O’Reilly is publishing an Amazon Hacks book, and I can’t decide if that seems really interesting or just really weird. Would you really need a book to figure out the Amazon Web Services API? On the other hand, there’s probably a lot of slick stuff in there that I’ve never even thought of. I’ve been using some homegrown PHP to deal with all my Amazon needs for a while - the reading and listening pages, in particular. I feed it an ASIN and it does the rest, but there’s definitely more I could do with it.

Speaking of the Hacks series, I received a copy of the Mac OS X Hacks book a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t had time to read it all the way through (see: work, classes), but from what I’ve sampled so far it’s pretty good. I’ll write up an actual review just as soon as I get the chance, my little buckeroos.

A couple of people have asked if I’ve heard about William Gibson’s weblog finishing up now that the Pattern Recognition tour is over and he’ll be starting another novel. So: yes, I have heard. It’s disappointing but not entirely unexpected. When I spoke with him at the New York PR signing, he indicated that he couldn’t see himself writing both the blog and a book at the same time, which makes sense. While I’ve really enjoyed his posts, I wouldn’t want them to come at the expense of another novel.

Shirts: soon. Think tonight or tomorrow.
