this is ourselves under pressure

when i have a weekend like this one coming up, i make a point of savoring thursday nights at the bar like the last meal before a lethal injection. everyone else seems to be doing likewise, if only because in a couple of weeks half of us will have graduated or gone back to other states for the summer. we’ve all sworn up and down we’ll be back at our usual table the first week of fall, and those of us who live in new york have exchanged the necessary email addresses and phone numbers, but it’s still a little depressing.

that said, last night was great. got perhaps a little tipsier than i’d intended; i keep forgetting that bringing only enough money for a pint or two is ineffective when people keep buying rounds. managed to make it home by midnight however, and i’m up at a reasonable hour this morning to go meet with my advisor about classes for the summer and/or fall.

and the question for the weekend is: can emma successfully finish her politics paper and write her india final in its entirety by monday? stay tuned.

this weekend’s potential (or indeed almost certain) horror aside, after i’ve handed in both papers on monday and tuesday things aren’t looking so bad. one more paper for politics, three finals, and then i’m done for the term. that’s this term, of course - i’m also working on getting registration and everything sorted out for next term. the excitement never stops, folks. EXTREME LEARNING.

megnut is always a treat, but megnut when she’s snarky? delicious.

ziggy, you whore

<derPapst> Have you ever tried to get glitter out of your urethra? It’s tempting to use some of that compressed air in a can but take it from me that is a VERY BAD IDEA.

jon and i tolerated the overwhelming heat this afternoon long enough to have smoothies on the bench outside oren’s and peoplewatch for a little. jon: “damn he’s cute… wait no, his shirt is.. i always get them confused. i’m all HELLO I WANT YOU, I MEAN YOUR CLOTHES, SORRY!”

yes, the weather continues to be absurd. it’s a sad state of affairs when i’d like to go to california to get away from the heat. in other news:

Dear Emma,
Thanks for signing my petition two weeks ago. I am runnning for President of the CAS Student Council. I aim to reorient student council away from social programming that affects very few students and instead to focus on issues, on advocacy, and on policy changing, including MAP. To vote, go to NYU HOME. I hope you take a moment to vote, and thank you for your consideration,
Andy Morey

dear andy, thanks for sending the first spam ever to my nyu inbox. hope you die! love, emma (ps: off to vote for anyone who isn’t you)

i’m awfully tempted to bitch (just a little bit more) about it being ninety degrees in mid-april, but i’m going to resist that temptation. instead, in the name of getting through this unholy season, i’m going to see if i can’t think of some things i actually like about summer.

· iced coffee. however much i might despise may through september with all its humidity and horror, i have to admit there’s nothing quite like the first iced coffee of the season. i’m referring here not only to straight up cold coffee (with ice in it) but also pretty much any iced beverage that is in some way coffee-related.
· no coat checks. yeah, i know i just got done explaining why i don’t do the club thing quite so much anymore, but when i do: warm weather means no coats and therefore no waiting in lines at coat check counters.
· no hat head. now that my hair’s actually long enough to be considered stubble or fuzz or what have you, it’s very susceptible to hat head. however, i don’t need to wear hats unless it’s cold out. hooray!
· skirts. winters in new york are quite windy. not down with the whole completely-freezing-from-waist-down thing, so i tend to stick to pants when it’s on the chilly side. but i do love skirts.
· cherry popsicles. simple pleasures, etc. come on, i’m making an effort here.

i think that’s a start, anyway. perhaps i’ll go get a bigass iced mocha now and clean out my closet when i get home.

yeah

so yesterday wasn’t all that fun; i made it to the city in a weird neither-awake-nor-asleep state and didn’t feel too terribly great. managed to stay more or less conscious through my first lecture, but after that i just gave up on the second one and went home to bed. i napped for a couple of hours and felt somewhat human again afterwards.

didn’t have any trouble sleeping last night, so i’m doing fine today (so far) if a little tired still. that’s what student lounges are for. it’s supposed to hit 87 and 90 degrees today and tomorrow, and i think we know what that means.

don’t disappoint them

i’m still not clear on why, exactly, i was only able to sleep for perhaps an hour and a half last night, but i’m suspiciously awake this morning nonetheless. the real question is whether it will last through my first lecture.

fever sure has got me good

last night was pretty great, i have to say. (or was that this morning?)

some of you may have already noticed the new addition to page one, replacing the dearly departed spencercam (which will perhaps be resurrected some day). rands has joined the camwhore ranks, and we’re glad to have him.

when i wake up, eventually, i’ve got some more paper writing to do. i do love sundays. also, scott is a dirty, dirty popstar.

talking to chrissy and al and bryan recently (to name a few) has led me to the conclusion that i’ve outgrown the whole club thing. that’s not to say i don’t still go out on occasion, and enjoy it, but more than once in a couple of months and i’m just struck by the incredible mundanity of the experience. yes, lovely, desperate girls wearing very little, loud music, drunken primates slobbering all over each other, fantastic. none of it is new, nor is it in my opinion very interesting. now, don’t get your knickers in a twist, mister dj - i realize there’s a certain appeal, i do appreciate that. i admit that once in a blue moon it’s great fun to go get trashed with several hundred strangers of varying mental states and blacklight reactivity. but every week? i just don’t have the requisite patience anymore, i’m afraid.

and now for something completely different: jeff made me this, and i think it’s absolutely adorable.
